Wimborne History Festival

We are taking part in this year's Wimborne History Festival on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 July.

Toy soldier casting

The museum is taking part in this year's Wimborne History Festival on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 July 2018, 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is free on both days.

The museum will be hosting a range of family activities throughout the weekend. Visitors will be able to find out about casting First World War toy soldiers and paint one to take away.

Enjoy traditional Edwardian games in the garden. Discover life on the Home Front with recipes from the period and test your knowledge with our First World War quiz.

Do you have any family stories of life during the First World War? Visit the oral history station to have them recorded.

The museum's 'The One Hundred Year Heritage of the First World War for Wimborne and East Dorset' project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will have a stand, along with the Somerset and Dorset Family History Society.

Discover 'Wildflowers', an exhibition of Edwardian childhood, and 'Only a Boy', a display commemorating the lives of two young soldiers.

This is part of Wimborne History Festival. Wimborne as a whole will be transported back one century as the town joins in the festival theme. A First World War military encampment will be set up on Allenbourn School playing fields, the last remaining airworthy First World War Bristol Scout bi-plane will be on display in the Square, and Silent Soldiers and First World War nurses will be promenading throughout the town. There are hands-on activities for all ages, fascinating exhibits and arena activities throughout Wimborne as part of this free living history event. More details can be found on their website.

Tistou the Boy with Green Fingers
On Sunday 22 July at 10.30am and 1pm, Bluebird the Storytelling will tell this delightful story in which a young boy discovers he has 'Green Fingers' and manages to avert a war with flowers. It brings in to question people's ready made ideas through the eyes of a child.

A good family story for those aged around 8 years+.

The Great War – Storytelling and Music with Harp and a Monkey
On Friday 20 July at 7pm the museum welcomes award-winning modern folk and storytelling trio Harp and a Monkey. The trio specialises in poignant, humorous and melodic historic short stories (traditional and original) about life, love and remembrance. Their work has been described as "bold and brilliant" by the likes of The Observer, "fantastic" and "fascinating" by Mark Radcliffe of BBC Radio 2, "inventive" by Mojo, "excellent" by The Guardian, and "rousing" by The Daily Telegraph.

Their innovative approach has seen them undertake numerous projects with the likes of the Arts Council and leading national galleries and museums. Fronted by First World War historian, author and broadcaster Dr Martin Purdy, the trio enjoy a fantastic rapport with their audiences and will perform their acclaimed First World War show for the first time in this part of England. The show is family friendly.

Tickets cost £3 for adults (free for children aged 17 years and under) and are available online through Eventbrite.
