Dig It

A day of archaeological family fun.

Roman soldier

Calling all budding archaeologists. The museum is the place to be for some archaeological family fun on Saturday 28 July 2018, 10am to 4pm, as we celebrate the Festival of British Archaeology.

Peel back the layers of time to discover an Iron Age roundhouse in our fantastic indoor archaeological dig. What artefacts will you discover along the way and what can they tell you about our past? Taste what the Romans actually ate…it might surprise you! Get hands on making wattle and daub. There will be craft activities including helmet making and dressing a Roman soldier. Have a go at our Roman 'Play Your Cards Right'. There will be something for everyone with quizzes, trails and much more.

Visitors will be able to meet a Roman soldier. Our soldier will be kitted out in Roman legionary uniform and displaying equipment as used at a large Roman fort. Visitors will discover what it is like to wear and maintain a full military kit.

Our Garden Tea Room will be open to serve light savoury snacks, delicious cakes, ice creams and drinks.

Admission is £1.75 (FREE entry with a valid Young Archaeologists' Club membership card). The Festival of British Archaeology is organised by the Council for British Archaeology.
