From the 27 July to 31 August, Monday to Saturday, ‘Sally’s Summer Sun Activities’ will offer a range of self-directed craft activities as part of your visit.
The museum’s new Open Learning Centre (supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund) includes a multi-purpose learning and community space in addition to our new tearoom where you can relax and enjoy a refreshing drink, including a choice of coffees, and a selection of delicious cakes or a cream tea.
The museum has a regular programme of changing exhibitions. ‘Suits You Sir’ explores the changing face of menswear. Up until the 1950s a person was often judged by the clothes he wore. There were strict rules as to when, where and what to wear at any given occasion. Even during hot weather a man was expected to wear his jacket in the presence of a lady and had to politely ask if he could remove it. A person’s job still dictates what can and cannot be worn. The displays feature a gentleman’s embroidered velvet waistcoat (circa 1900), a tie press (to remove any unsightly creases), a three piece suit with flared trousers and a double-breasted suit (2008).
The museum is open from the 29 March to 2 November, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm. Standard admission tickets are now valid for 12 months; with the exception of some special events and ticketed events, you can use your ticket to visit as many times as you like during normal opening hours.
